Of course, not every writer is an Apple enthusiast by any means, so you should consider whether or not the writer in your life is ‘anti-Mac’ before investing in a high-end gift such as a MacBook. If the writer in question already uses other Apple products, such as an iPad, iPhone or iWatch (all of which would make great gifts in themselves), the chances are that a MacBook would be very welcome.

As I have discussed elsewhere, the Amazon Kindle E-reader is fast becoming an essential piece of kit for writers, and those who are involved in any kind of digital publishing, or aspire to be, will find a Kindle to be just as useful as a proofing tool as it is for reading eBooks. There are several different models currently available, from a straightforward but beautifully functional Kindle up to the top-of-the range Kindle Oasis. Not to be confused with the Amazon Kindle E-reader devices, the Amazon Kindle Fire devices are designed to serve as general tablet computers. They will, of course, still allow the user to read eBooks, but they will also make it possible to watch videos, play music, browse the web and do thousands of other things via apps. With prices starting at just $50, the Kindle Fire might be a good tablet for someone who wants to do more than read books, but isn’t in need of the processing power boasted by something like the Apple iPad.
