When the Gadgets for Writers site was first launched way back in April 2009, we were living and working in a very different world. Cloud computing was in its infancy, netbooks were being touted as the next big thing, the Amazon Kindle was only available in the USA and PDA’s were only just beginning to be made obsolete by smartphones and tablet devices.
Less than a decade later, the technological landscape looks completely different. Even the cheapest of today’s smartphones have far more processing power than the very best PDA’s of yesteryear, almost all of us rely on ‘the cloud’ in one way or another, and people are far more likely to read books on an e-reader than they are hardback editions.
These changes have had a massive impact on the lives and careers of writers everywhere. Whereas technological gadgets were once potentially useful but largely optional tools that could help to give writers an edge, today they are very much a necessity. Gadgets for writers are therefore even more important now than they were when this site was founded.
To reflect the new relationship that writers have with their gadgets, this website has now been completely reformatted and rebooted. The old posts have been retained for posterity, but today we are marking the beginning of a brand-new chapter, which we could refer to as Gadgets for Writers 2.0.
Because there are so many gadgets on the market today, with new ones being launched almost every week, Gadgets for Writers won’t be attempting to discuss every item that becomes available. Instead, we will be taking a far more focused and selective approach, highlighting the very best gadgets which we believe will be of most relevance to writers of all disciplines.
We will also be introducing a Writers’ Library of book reviews, highlighting essential reference works as well as titles which are particularly useful to those who wish to improve and expand their skills in both fiction and non-fiction writing.
A new post will be published here at least once a month, so please feel free to bookmark the site for your future visits. If you would prefer to be notified automatically about new posts as and when they appear, you can sign up for a free subscription to Gadgets for Writers by using the simple form provided in the column on the right of your screen (or below this post, if you are reading it on a mobile device).
With all of that said, welcome to the new-look Gadgets for Writers website, and we hope that it helps you to enjoy many more years of happy and productive writing.
